Nauru finance woes on Forum agenda

4:06 pm on 27 July 2004

The continuing financial decline of Nauru is expected to be a key item on the agenda at next week's Forum summit in Apia.

A New Zealand Government official says Nauru may approach the Forum for assistance under the Biketawa Declaration.

Under the Declaration the Forum is expected to take action if a member requests help.

Forum countries are understood to be well disposed towards Nauru.

Earlier this year, one of the island's MPs compared the situation on Nauru with that in Solomon Islands before the Australian-led intervention there a year ago.
