Air Fiji engineers on strike

6:24 am on 28 July 2004

35 engineers from domestic airline, Air Fiji, have gone on strike after the company refused their demand to reinstate two sacked engineers, Thomas Newton and Joe Ah Yuk.

The Transport Workers Union says there was no compromise during talks with the company chief executive, Sialeni Vuetaki.

A company spokeswoman says flights to Tonga and Tuvalu will not be affected.

But a reduction in domestic flights is expected from tomorrow.

Inspectors from the Civil Aviation Authority have been sent to Air Fiji's engineering base at Nausori to ensure flights are conducted safely.
