Police in American Samoa are reported to have arrested a Samoan journalist on suspicion of raping a 12-year-old girl.

The newspaper the Samoa News cites police sources which name the journalist as Tony Taulapapa, a former reporter for the New Zealand-based weekly Samoan language newspaper, Samoa Post.

The Samoa News reports that Taulapapa was in Pago Pago to report on the centennial festivities for Manu'a.

The newspaper reports that charges are expected to be filed later today after the girl's mother reported the incident to police.

The alleged rape is reported to have taken place in Tafuna village, but it's not clear when.
