Plans for indigenous Fiji lawyer group

9:16 am on 31 July 2004

Moves are under way in Fiji to form an indigenous Fijian Lawyers' Association distinct from the Fiji Law Society.

Fiji TV reports that it is to be launched soon.

A Suva lawyer, Kitione Vuetaki, says an association specifically for indigenous lawyers will enable them to discuss "issues pertaining to the Fijian community from an indigenous point of view."

Referring to indigenous lawyers on trial for so-called political crimes, Mr Vuetaki says the Fijian Lawyers Association would help them abide by the rules of practice.
