The newly-installed government of New Caledonia has reaffirmed its support for the building of a new nickel-processing factory in the territory.

The president of the mining company Inco, Scott Hand, and the leader of the Southern province, Philippe Gomes say they want to get the plan started again.

The project has been stalled for nearly two years because of a cost review.

Mr Gomes says the factory will bring wealth and jobs.

Mr Hand, who's made his first visit to the territory since the change of government earlier this year, says they'll start a consultation process on the likely impact of the factory on the people who'll live nearby.
