Police Memorial Park in Solomons defaced a week after opening

7:17 am on 2 August 2004

Only days after the Solomon Islands Police Memorial Park at Rove in Honiara was officially dedicated, it has been defaced.

The Memorial Park monuments were dedicated just over a week ago in the presence of foreign Defence ministers, Police Commissioners and senior members of the Regional Assistance Mission.

But the main monument is now stained with betel nut spit and obscene graffiti.

The Solomons Islands Broadcasting Corporation says that during its dedication, the Chairperson of the Honiara Beautification Committee, Keithie Saunders, urged the public to take care and respect the monuments.

She said names of police officers who died in the course of their duty would be placed onto the memorial.
