Fiji's police commissioner is suggesting the former prime minister, Sitiveni Rabuka, has all allegations against him, dealt with, before he takes up a diplomatic posting overseas.
The ministry of Foreign Affairs says this morning the issue of Mr Rabuka's possible appointment as ambassador to the United States remains an internal matter and not yet publicly confirmed.
Police commissioner Andrew Hughes says the law enforcement doesn't have any influence on who goes overseas as a diplomat...
"Well obviously it's in everyone's interest that this matter be resolved; these outstanding issues be clarified, before, before, any er, any, such appointment, if that's the decision government takes, is put into action."
Commissioner Hughes has confirmed that a detective questioned Mr Rabuka at the weekend in relation to allegations about Mr Rabuka's involvement in the last coup.
Fiji TV aired a video tape after Ratu Mara's death, which showed the former president including Mr Rabuka as among those who asked him in 2000 to step down from the presidency.
