PNG's acting prime minister Maladina loses cabinet seat

4:37 pm on 4 August 2004

Papua New Guinea's National Planning Minister, Moses Maladina, has been removed from the cabinet - for a second time.

At the start of this week Mr Maladina was appointed acting prime minister while prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, attends the Pacific Forum meeting in Apia.

However that promotion lasted only until yesterday, when the Cabinet revoked the appointment after receiving a letter from the Opposition announcing his resignation.

Sir Moi Avei has taken over the planning folio and will also stand in as acting prime minister

Mr Maladina was previously deputy prime minister and minister for agriculture.

He was sacked from those posts but several weeks later was restored to cabinet as National Planning Minister.
