Solomons policeman guilty of intimidating journalists

12:14 pm on 5 August 2004

A former senior police officer in Solomon Islands is to be sentenced tomorrow for intimidating journalists.

The Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reports Manasseh Maelanga was yesterday found guilty of intimidating both the publisher and editor of the Solomon Star newspaper.

Maelanga was said to have been provoked by reports in the newspaper that criticised police officers thought to have been driving stolen vehicles.

Maelanga - who's already serving a term of 11 years on unrelated charges - is to be sentenced in relation to the two counts of intimidation tomorrow.

It comes after the former minister Daniel Fa'afunua was given a jail term for threatening the same newspaper.
