FFA says role remains despite creation of Tuna Commission

The Forum Fisheries Agency executive director, Feleti Teo, says he is confident that a role remains for the FFA despite the advent of the Tuna Commission.

The Commission is set to begin work from its Pohnpei base in December.

The Honiara-based FFA says there is a need to ensure there is no overlap and it has asked the Forum secretariat to undertake an assessment of its strategic plan.

But he sees a distinction between the two organisations.

"The Tuna Commission will regulate management matters as far as the high seas is concerned. For us, we are not a management regime. We are a policy advisory provider to our member countries. And the focus of our advice is in terms of the internal management regimes of our member countries."

Feleti Teo, the head of the Forum Fisheries Agency.
