PNG man killed in prisoner escape melee

3:40 pm on 10 August 2004

A bystander has been killed accidentally during attempts by Papua New Guinea authorities to recapture a prisoner.

Metropolitan superintendent, Simon Kauba, said the prisoner had been brought to Lae for a committal hearing.

But he managed to evade police escorts by mixing with the crowd.

An eyewitness has accused a prison warden of firing at the escapee, while the police fired in the air.

The dead man was said to have been hit in the head.

The National newspaper says he is still to be identified.
