There are hopes that the United States will significantly increase its aid to the Pacific region through its Millenium Challenge Account which is aimed at assisting developing countries.

The US held talks yesterday as part of the Post Forum Dialogue with several Pacific Governments' Ministers, including New Zealand Foreign Minister, Phil Goff.

He says they touched on security issues and transnational crime, including drugs and arms smuggling, and people trafficking.

Mr Goff says the Millenium Fund could have a major impact in the Pacific.

"The US is clearly the strongest economic country in the world, and the assistance it can give to small island developing countries is particularly significant."
