Unions in French Polynesia call a general strike

11:14 am on 11 August 2004

It's reported that unions of public service workers in French Polynesia have called a general strike.

"The Tahitipresse news agency reports that the unions, A Ti'A I Mua and the federation of independent unions of French Polynesia, have called for the industrial action to start next Tuesday (NZT)."

Unions are in a dispute with the authorities over the leadership of the social services agency, Caisse de Prevoyance Sociale.

The government says it doesn't want to bring the agency under local control.

Differences over the appointment of a director for the CPS sparked a single-day strike last week.
