Fiji police have warned that anyone inciting racial hared after the jailing of vice president Ratu Jope Seniloli would be charged.
The Fiji Times reports that the warning follows a villager's statement that he was prepared to lose his life in exchange for Seniloli's release.
Mosese Tukikaukamea said chiefs were to be respected and not treated anyhow.
He said the law had taken over the land and the traditional protocol of the Fijian people.
Mr Tukikaukamea has confirmed he was interviewed by police but said he told them that he stood by his word and was willing to lose his life in exchange for his chief's release.
But the assistant commissioner of police operations, Kemueli Bulamainaivalu, says anyone who threatens law and order or tries to create instability by making such comments would be taken to task.
He says intelligence officers are digging deep into the community and police will not spare anyone who tries to incite racial feelings.
