The Fiji government has endorsed the former prime minister and leader of two military coups in 1987, Sitiveni Rabuka, to be the country's next ambassador to the United States.

Radio Legend reports that this has been confirmed by the chief executive of the prime minister's office, Jioji Kotobalavu.

Mr Kotobalavu says all particulars regarding Mr Rabuka have been forwarded to the US for a security clearance.

He says all relevant information is required by the host government before it accepts a foreign diplomat.

The prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, told Radio Legend this morning that they are eagerly awaiting a response from the US government.
