French Polynesia fuel workers in talks to avert strike

9:54 am on 12 August 2004

A French Polynesian union is in talks in an effort to avert a strike set to begin at midnight tonight.

The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of French Polynesia is threatening to block petrol stations and the refuelling of planes.

Cyril Legayic of the CSIP union, which represents most of the territory's fuel sector workers, says they've held talks with companies that provide fuel to aviation and motorists.

The union and firms are in negotiations over possible changes to an employment through collective bargaining.

There is a dispute over whether the same collective bargaining agreement will cover employees in the event of their employing oil company changing its supplier.
