Ramsi denies report of assault of investigator

The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands denies reports that a crime investigator was assaulted by inmates at Honiara's Rove prison.

Police sources had said the person in question had left for Australia but a spokesperson for Ramsi says the report is incorrect and no such attack has occurred.

But Ramsi has confirmed that earlier this week two Australian prison advisors were attacked by inmates at Rove prison where on Tuesday about 200 inmates were involved in a riot.

Police describe the incident as a demonstration which was brought under control after negotiations.

The inmates also gave a petition to the police minister alleging reckless behaviour by Ramsi police - a claim denied by police.

The head of the Intervention Police Force in Solomon Islands, Sandy Peisley, says police and prison officers worked well to restore order in the prison through negotation, and says that there is no truth to claims the prisoners have been mistreated.

"I would very strongly deny any sort of behaviour of that type by the participating police force with Ramsi. I'm their commander and I'd obviously be very aware if that sort of bahaviour was occurring I would be one of te first to know about it."
