American Samoa court publicises soldier benefits

1:59 pm on 13 August 2004

The High Court in American Samoa has issued a notice to members of the American Samoa Bar Association to tell them of benefits their clients are entitled to if they are local soldiers preparing for deployment to Iraq.

About 200 soldiers from the territory's US Army Reserve Unit are only days away from being mobilised in Honolulu for training.

The court notice says under the Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act the reservists will be protected to stay proceedings in many cases.

This could involve the sale, foreclosure, or seizure of property for nonpayment of any sum due under a mortgage.
