The despatch of a Forum official to assess the state of Nauru is the first step in new diplomatic action to help the island.

Forum leaders agreed to act, at last week's summit.

Nauruans are reported to be running short of fuel and food as the government tries to find a way to manage the country's debt.

The Forum Secretary General, Greg Urwin, says a team is being prepared:

"We'll send a group over there in the next couple of weeks, now that we have got the expression of political will to support Nauru, we'll get into the business of specifics. We will now in effect post somebody to Nauru representing the Forum."
