New challenge for Solomon Islands media

8:31 pm on 23 August 2004

The media in Solomon Islands is being challenged to be pro-active in ensuring the population is informed to make the right choices.

General Manager of the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation and former President of the Pacific Islands News Association, Johnson Honimae issued the challenge, saying the media must take its responsibilities seriously.

Mr Honimae says with by-elections looming Solomon Islanders need to know the issues and be informed of the government reforms being implemented by the Regional Assistance Mission.

He says with the return of law and order, the media is not restricted by fear of intimidation as it was for the last five years.

Mr Honimae says it is up to the media to take up the challenge and make use of this situation.
