A new zone of high grade gold ore has been found in the Mt Kasi area of Fiji's second island, Vanua Levu.
The Fiji Times reports that this has been announced by the former operator of the now closed Mt Kasi Gold Mine, Burdekin Pacific.
The company's chief executive, Jerome Vitale, says it is an exciting prospect but no decision has yet been made on whether to resume mining.
Further drilling is taking place to explore the full extent of the gold vein.
The Mt Kasi Gold Mine began operating in 1996 but closed down two years later because of financial difficulties at a time when world gold prices were low.
