The Papua New Guinea Correctional Service Commissioner Richard Sikani has directed an investigation into the mass break out of more than 30 inmates at Lakiemata jail at the weekend..

The Post Courier reports Mr Sikani has asked his operations division to carry out an immediate investigation into the break out at the West New Britain jail.

According to reports escapees cut the iron bars in the cell block windows using guitar strings and hacksaw blades and made their escape.

The same instruments were used to cut the perimeter fence to escape.

Mr Sikani said the escapees were awaiting trial for various serious crimes such as murder, armed robbery, rape and abduction.
