The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority has begun investigating churches and trade unions for non-payment of taxes.
The authority's chief executive, Sila Kotobalavu, has told the Fiji Times all organisations which have shifted from their original objectives will be investigated to see if they have declared their rent income on their tax returns.
Mr Kotobalavu says they include organisations such as the Methodist Church which has extensive properties for which it has been receiving rent for many years.
He says if all outstanding taxes are collected, it would mean higher revenue for the government.
Earlier this week, the Fiji Public Servants Association protested that it was being targeted because it has an industrial dispute with the Revenue and Customs Authority.
