Fiji senator refuses apology over outburst

4:09 am on 28 August 2004

Fiji senator Jim Ah Koy has refused to apologise for a statement in the Upper House that the Qarase government caused the premature death of the former first lady, Adi Lady Lala Mara.

Mr Ah Koy had said that this was due to the government's ousting of her son-in-law, Ratu Epeli Ganilau, from the chairmanship of the Great Council of Chiefs.

The attorney general, Qoriniasi Bale, told the Senate today Mr Ah Koy's remarks were "outrageous, disgraceful and scandalous."

Mr Bale said they were "full of venomous insinuations" and demanded an apology and a retraction.

But Senator Ah Koy said he would not apologise because he was stating facts which came from within the Mara family.

He said he stood one hundred percent behind his statements.
