An environmental scientist from Kiribati has big plans for her scholarship studies into waste management.

Danfung Binoka says the disposal of waste and degredation of the environment, owing to pollution are among the top five challenges facing the country.

Miss Binoka says she'll be using her US$20,000 scholarship to study the ways in which she can educate the women of Kiribati to better handle household waste.

She explains why she chose ordinary women, rather than government, local councils or men to work with:

"Because traditionally our women are tasked to deal with cleaning up at the household level and to educate this and to pass on their skills to the children. Some men are helping out, but still most of the women are doing the job."
