Fiji's prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, says he is ready to form a multi-party cabinet which includes Labour.

In a letter to the Labour leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, Mr Qarase says he has fulfilled the Supreme Court's opinion on the multi-party cabinet handed down last month.

He says the Supreme Court had reaffirmed that the size of the cabinet, the assignment of portfolios and the selection of those to be appointed as ministers was the sole responsibility of the prime minister.

Mr Qarase says he has fulfilled the constitutional requirement for consultation with the leader of the Labour Party and is ready to advise the President on those MPs from Labour to be appointed as ministers.

Mr Qarase says it is the Labour Party which is holding back the multi-party cabinet through its pending appeal case and insistence on negotiations
