Fiji police have received an official complaint asking them to investigate allegations that the prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, had pior knowledge of the coup in 2000.

Fiji TV reports that the 3-page letter of complaint was lodged at the weekend by the senior Labour Party MP, Poseci Bune.

Mr Bune says he is fulfilling his legal and constitutional responsibilities by calling for a police investigation because Mr Qarase holds such a high office.

He says police should either exonerate Mr Qarase or take appropriate legal action.

Mr Bune first made the allegation in parliament some time ago but Mr Qarase angrily denied it.

Last week, a former cabinet minister and now senator, Jim Ah Koy, also made a call in the Upper House for police to investigate allegations that Mr Qarase had prior knowledge of the coup.
