Solomon Islands brings USP debt payments up to date

8:18 am on 4 September 2004

The Solomon Islands government has made a payment of US$500,000 against its debt to the University of the South Pacific for government contributions.

The acting vice-chancellor, Professor Rajesh Chandra, thanked the government for making efforts to pay its debts, despite the economic difficulties it faces.

Solomon Islands has the second largest number of students at USP.

Professor Chandra says that the papers being presented to the next meeting of the Finance and General Purposes Committee will include a review of the current budget.

This review shows that expenditure is within the budget, and the University expects to end the year with a surplus, again.

The Committee will also consider next year's budget.

Professor Chandra also says the university will be able to maintain its initiatives, in the areas of support for smaller member countries, arts and culture, and research fellowship.
