Fiji is looking to export workers as a major source of foreign exchange earnings.
The minister for foreign affairs and external trade, Kaliopate Tavola, says remittances from workers abroad amounted to 145 million US dollars last year, ahead of earnings from garment and sugar exports.
The money came from thousands of Fiji nationals employed in the British army, on security and peacekeeping duties in the Middle East and elsewhere, and nurses and teachers working in many countries.
Mr Tavola says the export of workers would have to be categorised as an industry soon because of its contribution to the economy and more skills training provided to meet the global demand.
