No end in sight in New Caledonia media strikes

4:34 pm on 9 September 2004

A union spokesperson representing striking workers at New Caledonia's public radio and television broadcaster, RFO, says he hopes negotiations with management will take place next week.

Pierre Chauvat of the USTKE union says although the twenty workers are in their fourth week of industrial action there has been no dialogue between the parties.

"Nothing. No negotiation, nothing at all has been discussed since the beginning of the strike."

Mr Chauvat says a change in RFO's management to France Television is the reason for the delay in discussions.

He says the impact on the public is slight because only local news and sport is affected by the industrial action.
