Solomons court to hear Bartlett's bail application on Friday

1:21 pm on 14 September 2004

The Solomon Islands high court will decided on Friday whether to grant bail to the sacked agriculture minister, Alex Bartlett, who has been in remand since the beginning of the month.

Bartlett faces a variety of charges, including demanding money with menaces and arson.

The public solicitor, Ken Averre, who represents Bartlett, says his client deserves bail because he is a person of high standing with obligations to many people, including his constituency in Malaita.

He also says Bartlett is an active member of his church and has several businesses to supervise.
