Virgin Blue hopes to fly to Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, once a week from Australia, via Christchurch in New Zealand, by Christmas.

The head of commercial operations for the Virgin subsidiary, David Huttner, has told the Cook Islands News that the company is waiting to discuss the proposal with the incoming government.

Mr Huttner says discussions are required once the situation is settled from the recent general election.

Virgin Blue would be in competition with Air New Zealand.
