The Prime Minister's office in Fiji is remaining tight-lipped about the legality of keeping the Vice President and Deputy Speaker on full pay in jail.

The Vice President, Ratu Jope Seniloli and the Deputy Speaker Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure were convicted for serious coup-related offences and their continued payment has caused outrage in Fiji.

Laisenia Qarase's assistant private secretary, Pene Nonu, says the office has sought legal advice on the matter from the Solicitor General, Nainendra Nand.

But Mr Nonu says the issue ultimately rests with the Attorney General, Qoriniasi Bale, as it falls under his portfolio.

Mr Bale said last week that he had no idea the two were being paid until he was contacted by local media.

Mr Bale - who was unable to be contacted today - had said he needed to verify whether the two were receiving salaries in jail.
