PNG police budget faces cut

1:23 pm on 23 September 2004

Papua New Guinea's Police Department budget is to be cut by ten per cent next year.

The Post-Courier newspaper says the cut was revealed by Deputy Commissioner Tom Kulunga at a Commissioner's conference in Kimbe.

The paper quotes the deputy commissioner as telling the meeting that the government was tightening up on the department's budgetary allocation because of the current economic situation.

He told fellow senior officers the department would introduce measures to ensure the new budget limits would not be exceeded, steps would be taken to reduce the high cost of litigation, financial management would be improved and there would be no more recruitment next year.
