Counter petitions have been filed in one of the Cook Islands constituencies.

The petitions have come from the leader of the Cook Islands Tumu Enua, political faction , Norman George and the winnning Democratic Party candidate Eugene Tatuava in the Atiu Electorate of Tengatangi, Areora and Ngatiarua.

The Cook Islands News reports each man is accusing the other of breaching the Electoral Act in the lead-up to the election on the seventh of September.

Mr Tatuava beat Mr George by six votes.

Mr George claims Mr Tatuava supplied directly or indirectly free beer to 18 voters.

However Mr Tatuava claims that police on the island intimidated his supporters during the election.
