Fiji Democrats say the Government should pay price hike by state power company

The Fiji Democratic Party says the government should pay the 25% increase in power prices proposed by the state-owned Fiji Electricity Authority.

The party leader, Filipe Bole, says the state payment should be part of the government's programme to take electricity to rural areas.

Mr Bole has also criticised the higher tariff proposal going to the Commerce Commission for approval instead of being decided on by those elected and generously paid to make decisions.

He says Fiji is now truly governed by committees which could easily be apportioned blame if the tariff increases become unpopular with consumers.
