Pitcairn accused pleads guilty to three charges

10:12 am on 5 October 2004

One of the defendants in the Pitcairn Island sex abuse trial has pleaded guilty to three of the four charges he faced, and the fourth has been dismissed after the crown offered no evidence.

Dennis Christian, who's 49, admitted indecently assaulting a girl of 12 in the early 1980's.

The details of the two other charges are suppressed.

The British detective who lead the sex abuse investigation has described it as a significant development, which he said has spared the complainant from giving evidence.

Dennis Christian is the island's postmaster and a distant cousin to the most prominent defender, the now mayor of Pitcairn Steve Christian.

Dennis Christian was remanded on bail until sentencing at a later date.
