A report in Papua New Guinea says Indonesian authorities are holding a PNG police officer in the province of Papua on suspicion of heading a smuggling ring.

The National newspaper reports Wewak police sergeant Bruno Kaib has been detained in Jayapura for illegally entering Indonesia.

It reports that information available to it suggests Sergeant Kaib was transporting vanilla buyers to Jayapura but the boat had contraband on board.

The newspaper says it understands an accomplice of the sergeant has been jailed for smuggling marijuana.

The Wewak police chief, Leo Kabilo, says Sergeant Kaib is being held but says his officer went to Jayapura on a private trip in the police boat.
