New candidates emerge in Nauru election

4:35 pm on 12 October 2004

The Pacific Islands Forum representative on Nauru says many new candidates are stepping forward for the island's election.

Chitra Jeremiah says candidate nominations close later this week, ahead of the ballot on Saturday, October the 23rd.

Mrs Jeremiah says the final list of candidates will be shaped by next week.

She says there are a lot of new faces:

"I think the basic idea behind these new candidates, from what I've heard, from what they've been telling locals around the island, is that it's sort of a strategy to uproot the old leaders, or the old MPs and get a new fresh blood in, to the parliament."

The Supreme Court has given the final go-ahead for the poll after a challenge on whether the president had the constitutional right to dissolve parliament.
