The American Samoa Power Authority has had to limit operational hours for underground water wells because low rainfall has pushed up chloride content to critical levels.
ASPA's Water Operations Manager Neemia Mareko says they are only turning on some of the water wells at night time to protect the aquifers.
Mr Mareko says the rainfall for September and the first week of October have hardly moved the water tables.
He says ASPA is reviewing the water situation this week with a view towards implementing strict measures to control water usage.
In the meantime ASPA is asking everyone to conserve water.
Organisers of car washes have been urged to refrain from their fundraisers until the water situation improves.
