Nearing typhoon forces school closures in Guam

2:30 pm on 19 October 2004

Reports from Guam say all state schools have been closed as Typhoon Nock-Ten nears the island and gathers strength.

The Pacific Daily News reports meteorologists as saying the storm is expected to get closer to Guam tomorrow, with wind speeds reaching about 170 kilometres an hour.

Island residents are being asked to take down US election campaign signs, and stock up on food and water.

The governor's spokeswoman Erica Perez, says if officials declare what is known as a Condition of Readiness Two, all government functions will shut down - except the police station and hospital.
