4:23 pm on 19 October 2004

The governor of the Northern Mariana Islands has warned residents to prepare for an incoming typhoon.

A statement issued this morning from Juan Babauta's office asks residents of Tinian, Rota and Saipan to monitor closely the progress of Typhoon Nock-Ten.

The governor has upgraded the typhoon alert to what is known as Condition Two in response to the threat from the storm.

Nock-Ten has maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometres an hour, with gusts at even greater velocity.

Residents are asked to review their disaster supply kits and secure outside furniture and other loose objects.
