Fiji's jailed vice president reported to have hired an expensive Australian lawyer

Fiji's jailed vice president Seniloli has engaged an Australian lawyer costing 6-thousand US dollars a day to lead his appeal next month.

Radio Fiji quotes one of the local lawyers in the defence team, Abhay Singh, as saying the Australian Queen's Counsel will be in Fiji on the 23rd of this month but refused to reveal his name.

But Mr Singh has confirmed filing amended grounds of appeal in advance of the case being called in chambers before the president of the Appeal Court, Justice Gordon Ward.

Officials of the court registry say Seniloli's lawyers have yet to file the full appeal submissions although they were due on the 15th of this month.

Seniloli's appeal is scheduled to be heard on November the 2nd and 3rd.

He was jailed for four years to taking an illegal oath to commit a capital offence by being sworn in as the usurper president during the coup, while the lawfully appointed president, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, still held office.
