9:16 am on 30 October 2004

Hundreds of Niueans have welcomed the New Zealand prime minister, Helen Clark, at the start of a two day visit to the cyclone-hit island.

Families greeted New Zealand-based Niueans travelling with Miss Clark and the Associate Pacific Island Affairs Minister, Taito Philip Field.

Miss Clark is expected to meet her Niuean counterpart, Young Vivian, for formal talks today.

Discussions will focus on rebuilding the island after Cyclone Heta, and increasing economic self-sufficiency through private sector investment.
