Cyclone awareness to be held next week in the Cook Islands

4:03 pm on 29 October 2004

The Meteorological Service in Cook Islands is preparing an awareness programme next Monday to educate people about evacuation procedures during the cyclone season.

The season usually runs between November and April.

The Met Service director Arona Ngari says the programme is appropriate since the Cook Islands will have an increased risk of cylone activity this year due to warmer seas.

"So this warm pool of water can start drifting towards the East during the El Nino and even now with the weak El Nino, this then increases in the risk of tropical cyclones to form on the date line or even to the East of the dateline. So the contributing factor for this will be the warm season temperature, especially in the northern part of the Cook Islands, as well as around the equator."

Other countries in the area facing increased risks this summer are Fiji, Niue, and possibly Tuvalu, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga and the Austral Islands of French Polynesia.

The programme will run for a week.
