The Marshall Islands Marine Resources Authority says the preliminary result of a fish survey of Majuro atoll, has shown that the depletion of fish stocks is getting worse.

The survey, which began in 2002, is being financed by Japan's Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation.

The Authority's Deputy Director for Coastal Fisheries, Danny Jack, says the survey is part of a move to eventually implement a Fish Management plan, but more work is needed.

"Some of the fish are getting smaller cos there's a lot of fishers within the atoll, not including those like there's sport fishing and all that. They have to be put together as we've yet to come up with the final results of this survey that we've been undertaking"

Danny Jack says the is also a survey being done in nearby Arno atoll.

Mr Jack says they hope to have a fishing plan in place by 2006.
