Hearing of Fiji vice-president's appeal against jail sentence begins today

11:11 am on 2 November 2004

The Fiji Court of Appeal will today begin hearing jailed vice president Seniloli's appeal against his four-year prison sentence for taking an illegal oath to commit a capital offence.

The offence relates to Seniloli being sworn in as the usurper president immediately after the Speight coup while the legally appointed president, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, still held office.

Also appealing his sentence will be the jailed deputy Speaker of parliament, Vakalalabure, who is serving a 6-year sentence for being sworn in as the purported attorney general in Speight's failed administration.

Three others sworn in as purported ministers in that administration will also be appealing their sentences.

An Australian lawyer, Paul Willee, has been engaged to help local lawyers Abhay Singh and Mehboob Raza lodge the appeal.

The Appeal Court comprises its president, Justice Gordon Ward, and a panel of senior overseas judges.

Security has again been stepped up around the Suva court complex for the case.
