A call for more information to try and combat the rising number of suicides in Fiji

5:22 pm on 2 November 2004

Statistics supplied by Fiji's Police Department show that deaths by suicides last year outstripped the drowning and road death tolls.

Last year there were 102 suicides and there have been 73 deaths so far this year.

The principal medical officer of St Giles Hospital, Dr Odille Chang, says more information is needed to be able to tackle the problem:

"I think one of things we are lacking a lot in, is knowing what are some of the risk factors and what are some of the circumstances that lead people to commit suicide here in Fiji. The other thing is I think we need to work more on developing community awarenesss of the problem"
