American Samoa's congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, has also urged Samoa's Prime Minister -- as Pacific Islands Forum chairperson -- to act on the deteriorating political situation in French Polynesia.

Faleomavaega told the Samoa Observer that it was within the nuances of French Polynesian territorial laws for new elections to be held with the dissolution of parliament.

He said he would like the Forum to organise a fact-finding committee to look into the situation.

Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele, has said he is monitoring the situation closely.
