Fiji NGO raps commodity price hike

10:33 am on 4 November 2004

A mainline church-sponsored Fiji NGO has warned the government that sharply increasing prices of powdered milk, butter and rice are hurting those who lack money to satisfy their basic needs.

The director of the Ecumenical Centre for Research, Education and Advocacy, Aisake Casimira, says many poor people who comprise half of Fiji's population are falling even deeper into debt.

Mr Casimira says while prices are soaring, the government is opposing wage increases based on increases in the Cost of Living.

Mr Casimira says "this amounts to serious injustice and oppression of the poor and low income earners."
